Lent Day 4
by Anthony Delgado on February 17th, 2024
The Apostle Paul often relied on the churches for provision. He considered himself blessed to have received abundantly everything he needed from the church at Philippi. This offering was not merely for his own sake, but he reminds them that it is a fragrant offering and an acceptable sacrifice that pleases God. This imagery points back to the Old Testament sacrificial system when flesh was burned on the brazen altar, often with incense or fragrant herbs. But it is not the fragrance that pleases God. The people's obedience and willingness to sacrifice for the good of each other that pleases God.   Read More
Lent Day 3
by Anthony Delgado on February 16th, 2024
Daniel was troubled by events in Babylon while Israel and Judea were in exile. He longed to see his people return to the Promised Land and rebuild the temple in Jerusalem. He mourned for his people in sackcloth and ashes. For this reason, Daniel committed himself to prayer. As followers of Jesus, we have confidence that God hears our prayers even when we do not fast. But Daniel sought God with fasting and mourning to draw nearer in spirit by drawing himself away from the flesh. We may deny our flesh for a time to seek God in times of great need.   Read More
Lent Day 2
by Anthony Delgado on February 15th, 2024
Sacrifices shouldn’t be seen negatively–according to what we give up, that the body needs or desires. Instead, when we sacrifice, we do so to share with others. Our sacrifices do good for our brothers and sisters in Christ and for the community around us. So, if you sacrifice food for Lent, give to others. If you sacrifice luxuries (things you would usually buy), give to the Church. When you sacrifice positively, blessing others and building God’s Kingdom, God is pleased with such sacrifices.  Read More
Lent Day 1
by Anthony Delgado on February 14th, 2024
The season of Lent mirrors Jesus’s temptation in the wilderness. Jesus was led into the wilderness, where he fasted for 40 days while being tempted by Satan. His sacrifice of the physical bolstered his spiritual stamina. Likewise, our sacrifices of the things the body desires prepare us to persevere through temptation and other spiritual hardships.  Read More
