Lent Day 5

In the New Testament context, we often speak of giving as liberal, according to conscience and means. We then assume that the Old Testament gifts to God’s work were strict and rigid–the 10% tithe, plus other commanded gifts. But, notice Moses’s words, “everyone whose heart is willing.” We should remember that God does not need our gifts, although he chooses to work through his people. As we are willing to give to God’s work, we must do so. If we are unwilling to give to God’s work, we must pray and reflect on what is lacking in our hearts and minds that prevents us from generosity towards God and his Kingdom work.

PRAYER: Lord Jesus, give us generosity where it is lacking. Bestow on us hearts willing to bring to the LORD all that is required for his Church to thrive. In every way that we are unwilling, reveal to us the defect of our hearts, and increase our heart for your work and purpose. Amen.
