Lent Day 24

King David observed the spread of evil on the earth and the way faithful followers of the LORD often undergo persecution from them. But he knew Yahweh would deliver the faithful. Therefore, he gives this advice: when life is hard, and you find it challenging to remain faithful, (1) wait, (2) be strong, and (3) let your heart be courageous. Waiting is an act of patience where you endure a time of trial to demonstrate your faithfulness to God. ‘Be strong’ is not a challenge to muster some kind of strength you don’t have, but another way of saying you can remain firm in your convictions even though the world is difficult at this time. “Let” is an interesting addition. If you are in Christ, you already have the courage to stand firm in your faith. But fear often cripples us, where our flesh doesn’t want to comply with our internalized faith. Therefore, let your heart be courageous according to the promises of God, and do not let it be cowardly according to the fears of the flesh. Wait for the LORD, and “I believe that I shall look upon the goodness of the LORD in the land of the living!” (Psalm 27:13).

PRAYER: Lord Jesus, we will wait on you, even in times of trial and difficulty. We pray for courage by your Spirit to combat the fears of our mortal flesh. Let our hearts be courageous as we hope in the goodness of the LORD. Amen.
